ACPL maintains a secure atmosphere for everyone. This document establishes protocols to safeguard children and vulnerable patrons. While staff offer assistance, they do not serve as substitutes for parental supervision. The library does not assume liability for the well-being of unaccompanied minors or vulnerable guests.
Children aged eight (8) and below, plus at-risk minors and adults*, must be directly supervised by a parent, guardian, or designated caretaker throughout their visit. Adults bear responsibility for overseeing children’s conduct and ensuring appropriate behavior. Library personnel lack specialized training for continuous childcare duties.
Recognizing developmental differences, ACPL staff exercise professional judgment in applying these standards to each unique circumstance.
Staff will make reasonable efforts to connect with supervising adults when concerns arise, including situations where:
A minor appears abandoned or neglected.
Behavioral issues breach established conduct guidelines.
Health or safety risks become apparent.
Supervision fails to occur upon closing hours.
When guardians cannot be located, authorities will be notified per protocol. Immediate emergencies trigger direct communication with emergency services.
Patrons must arrange timely departures before closing. Unattended minors beyond scheduled hours may prompt law enforcement contact at management discretion.
Exceptions exist for official ACPL events requiring approved transportation arrangements. All external transport requires prior authorization through proper administrative channels.
Policy implementation prioritizes equitable treatment while upholding safety standards. Staff interpret guidelines flexibly within defined parameters to address diverse scenarios.
*At-risk patrons refer to individuals unable to self-sustain without caregiver oversight.
